In a groundbreaking move, Vietnam and Thailand—two of the world's top rice exporters—have formed a Rice Innovation Alliance to address climate risks, rising production costs, and global food security concerns. Announced in Hanoi, the bilateral program aims to modernize the rice value chain through advanced agritech, AI-driven crop forecasting, and sustainable cultivation practices.
The alliance seeks to support both countries in maintaining export stability as extreme weather conditions continue to impact rice farming. The El Niño-induced droughts of 2024 reduced yields by nearly 14% in some regions, prompting governments to adopt more resilient farming models.


Key objectives of the alliance include:
Developing drought-resistant and salt-tolerant rice varieties
Launching AI-powered crop prediction systems for farmers
Reducing chemical fertilizer dependency by 30%
Expanding drip irrigation and water conservation programs
Streamlining export logistics between major ports


Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that the partnership will enhance the global competitive position of both nations, which collectively account for over 30% of global rice exports.
Thailand's agricultural authorities highlighted that climate variability threatens the livelihood of over 3 million rice farmers. The alliance will help diversify income sources and introduce precision agriculture techniques to optimize resource consumption.
A major component is the introduction of a Bilateral Smart Rice Corridor, connecting Vietnam's Mekong Delta with Thailand’s Central Plains. This corridor uses IoT sensors to track moisture, soil quality, pest behavior, and expected yield output. Data will be shared between both countries through a secure digital platform supported by Japanese agritech partners.
International development agencies including ADB and FAO have expressed interest in co-funding parts of the program, especially initiatives related to climate adaptation.
The alliance is also expected to stabilize regional rice prices and prevent the supply shocks seen in 2023–2024 when India’s export restrictions reshaped the global food market.
