Ethica: Atif R. Khan, the Banker Who Built a Bridge to Islamic Finance

Investment bankers learn finance. Shariah scholars learn Islamic law. Very few people spend serious time in both worlds, and that gap is the space Atif R. Khan has worked in for more than two decades. As founder and managing director of Ethica Institute of Islamic Finance, he has built one of the best-known training and certification providers in the field. Ethica is a nominee in the Finance category of the TPC Awards 2026.

From Morgan Stanley to Islamic finance

Khan began his career as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley in New York and London, working on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and capital markets transactions worth more than $3 billion in total. He later served as chief financial officer of Iprox Limited in London, and then as Director of Islamic Finance at BankT&D in Dubai, before turning to Islamic finance full time.

He founded Ethica in 2002. While building its course content, he spent five years studying the Shariah sciences, the final years of them working one-on-one with leading Islamic finance scholars. He was educated at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and at Harvard, and today also sits on Ethica's Shariah board.

Training a profession

Ethica's core idea is that Islamic finance needs practitioners who understand both the banking and the Shariah behind a product. Its flagship qualification, the Certified Islamic Finance Executive (CIFE), is accredited against the standards of AAOIFI, the Bahrain-based body that sets Shariah and accounting standards for Islamic financial institutions. It is supported by advanced certificates in Takaful, financial analysis and accounting. In 2020, AAOIFI granted the CIFE and advanced programmes official continuing-professional-development recognition.

Training is delivered online through Ethica's own learning platform, or live inside client banks. The institute says it has trained more than 15,000 paying professionals across 65 countries, with clients concentrated in the Gulf. Over the years it has worked with the Government of Dubai, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and UNHCR, among others.

Recognition

Ethica's work has been recognised several times. In 2013 it received the Islamic Economy Award for Research and Education, presented by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Earlier, in 2011, it was named Best Islamic Finance Qualification at the Global Islamic Finance Awards in Oman.

Taking the argument to a wider audience

Alongside training bankers, Khan has spent recent years explaining Islamic finance to the public. In 2011 he led what organisers described as the first training of its kind in the United States, teaching the basics of Islamic finance to imams from across the country. In 2026 he is touring North America with talks on riba, or interest, and its alternatives, with dates across Canada and the United States and past venues including Harvard University.

The thread running through it all is the one he started with: closing the gap between bankers who rarely study the Shariah and scholars who rarely study banking.

Ethica Institute of Islamic Finance is a nominee in the Finance category of the TPC Awards 2026. Details are as provided in the nomination submission and Ethica's published materials.
