AGM Inc: How a Guyanese Gold Mine Became the Country's Largest Solar Operator

Gold mining is among the most energy-hungry industries in the world, and remote mines have traditionally run on diesel. In Guyana, AGM Inc has set out to change that. Its Aurora operation now runs on what the company describes as the country's largest solar power system, and the initiative has earned AGM a nomination in the Energy & Utilities category of the TPC Awards 2026.

Guyana's largest solar system

By April 2026, AGM had brought installed solar capacity at Aurora to 49.4 MW, supported by large-scale battery storage. According to the company, the system is expected to generate around 63 million kWh of clean electricity a year, displacing roughly 18 million litres of diesel and avoiding about 47,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Solar now meets all of the electricity demand in the mine's living quarters and around 75% of the energy needs of its concentrator plant, the most power-intensive part of gold processing.

Production up, emissions down

The energy transition has not come at the expense of output. AGM reports that mine-produced gold reached 4.5 tonnes in 2025, up from 4.1 tonnes in 2024. In February 2025, processing capacity increased from 8,200 to 10,000 tonnes per day, while recovery rates improved from 92% to above 93%.

That combination is the core of the case: a remote, energy-intensive operation that increased production while cutting its dependence on imported fuel.

Built on a local workforce

The solar expansion created around 100 local jobs and renewable-energy training opportunities, according to the company. Guyanese nationals make up 89% of AGM's workforce, and the company delivered 10,601 hours of employee training in 2025. A further 140 employees received long-service recognition, and AGM was named Employer of the Year at Guyana's ECONOME 2026 awards.

The initiative has been led on the social responsibility side by Ragunauth Ramsaroop, Liaison Director in AGM's Social Responsibility Department, who submitted the nomination.

As Guyana's economy grows rapidly on the back of its natural resources, the question of how those resources are extracted is becoming harder to ignore. AGM's Aurora project offers one answer: mining that becomes cleaner and more locally rooted as it grows.

AGM Inc is a nominee in the Energy & Utilities category of the TPC Awards 2026. Figures are as provided in the nomination submission.
