PayWatch and the Plain-Language Fix for Confusing Bills

For many households, the hardest part of a bill is not always the amount. It is understanding what the letter says, what is due and what happens next. That is harder still for people facing language or financial-literacy barriers.

PayWatch, based in the Netherlands, was built for that gap. Users scan or upload a bill, check the details the app has extracted and see what needs their attention. They can then ask PayBuddy, the app's assistant, for a plain-language explanation. The user stays in control of the information and decides on the next step.

Help on the channels people already use

Accessibility is central to the design. Alongside the app, PayWatch offers multilingual phone access and support on WhatsApp, reaching people through channels they already use rather than asking them to learn new ones. The company describes itself as "the smart buffer between you and collection costs".

A lean, self-funded team

The business is young, small and self-funded. PayWatch has been operating for six months, and three people work on it full-time: co-founder Samba Jarju, who leads operations; co-founder Hadja Mariama Sesay, who covers legal and sales; and full-stack developer Sulayman Colley. PayWatch has raised no outside funding, and the app had around 700 consumer users in early November 2026.

Recognition has come quickly. On 5 November 2026, PayWatch won at the Credit Management Awards, which recognise developments in the debt collection industry.

The next stage is about partners

PayWatch is in discussions with energy suppliers, collection agencies, municipalities and debt-support organisations about how they could use the service to better support the people they serve. These are discussions rather than signed contracts, and the company does not claim proven reductions in debt. What it has done is turn an everyday problem into a working product with a lean team.
